Theatre Raleigh has an all-out hit with its production of the musical, “Parade.” Every element, from performers to technical aspects, reflects the highest talent and creativity. As applied to the disturbing-yet-moving true story of an infamous murder trial, these elements come together in a textbook example of how theater should work.

Director Eric Woodall once again proves a master at fashioning a nigh-perfect whole from many parts. His casting is so right that it’s difficult to imagine others in the roles. The production dramatically demonstrates the visceral force that live theater can exert and shouldn’t be missed.

…director Eric Woodall’s nimble production concept lends an added measure of intimacy to Kennedy Theater by moving the performance area closer to the front rows and placing audience banks along the left and right sides of the stage. The latter stratagem makes the audience look like jury members during climactic courtroom scenes..a moving production that will not let us forget a historic miscarriage of justice.

The production uses about a dozen chairs, two benches, a pair of tables, two set pieces resembling prison bars, a geometric tree-like structure, a few props, and inventive audience seating to bring the show to life. It is minimalist design at its finest: entire creative team did a masterful job…
